Resilience Building Toys for Children

One of the key factors in building resilience is developing good problem-solving skills. These skills can be built in a number of ways but in young children, the best way to develop them is during play. Toys that encourage creativity and imagination give children opportunities to solve problems in practical ways. Below is a list of toys that foster resilience in children.

1. Magnetic Building Blocks

These are a huge hit in my home and in my classroom. They are easy for children to manipulate and provide many opportunities to problem solve while building. You can add props, such as people and animals, to extend the play. There are a variety of brands, some of which are very pricey. This one is good quality and cost-effective.

2. Lego

This toy never goes out of style. Children ages 4-99 can enjoy hours of creativity with this classic toy. The set below has 790 pieces and comes in a handy storage box. The bricks are compatible with all Lego sets providing unending opportunities for creativity, imagination, and problem-solving.

3. Building Blocks

Blocks not only encourage imaginative play, but also give children opportunities to explore early math concepts such as shapes, part-to-whole, and sorting. Block building also helps to develop hand-eye coordination, patience, and problem-solving skills. Add props and the creative possibilities are endless.

This version, created by Melissa and Doug, comes with its own wooden storage crate.

       4. Playdoh

What child can resist the irresistible invitation to create that comes in every container of playdoh? In addition to sparking imaginative play, manipulating the dough helps to strengthen the fine motor muscles of the hand which is needed to grasp writing materials. There are a variety of sets and tools that can add to the creative fun.

The set below is an Amazon exclusive and comes in 36 colors.

      5. Dress-up clothing

Playing dress-up gives children multiple opportunities to use their imagination and to solve problems. Role-playing helps children make sense of the world around them and their real-life experiences. The set featured below has a police officer, firefighter, and a doctor and comes with accessories.
